KURAZUKURI The principal attraction in Kawagoe is its warehouse merchant houses, many of which have been designated as 'national treasures'. The clay-walled buildings, called kurazukuri, were built to be fireproof - by sealing them completely and leaving a candle burning inside, the buildings were starved of oxygen, leaving the fire nothing to breathe. There used to be more than 200 of them, but after a disastrous fire swept the town in 1893, only a few dozens remained in several districts. |
