199802-01 YOKOHAMA
Today it's Japan's largest port and second largest city. Its fortunes are very much those of modern Japan. It was opened to foreign trade in 1858; in 1872 Japan's first railway line was laid, connecting the city with Tokyo; by the early 20th century the city had embarked on a course of industrialization. Nowadays its port facilities are complemented by massive steel-making, automobile, oil-refining and chemical industries.

Sankei-en Garden was established in 1906 by a Yokohama silk merchant. The beautifully landscaped gardens feature a three story pagoda that is 500 years old. The pagoda, along with an old villa and farmhouse, was moved to the garden.
